Hans Wirsching Silvaner: What's up with the unique shape of the bottle?

One of my new favorites in the store is the Hans Wirsching Silvaner. This wine shows melon, pear, citrus and almond aromas and flavors.  I love the fun shape of the bottle too!  Reg price: $24.95Wine Club Price:  $22.46

When you look at the bottle that the Hans Wirsching Silvaner comes in, the first thing that catches your eye is the uniquely shaped green bottle the wine comes in”; it is shaped almost like a large fancy perfume bottle.  The flattened, flask-shaped bottle is known as a bocksbeutel, or “buck bag.” It is used in the central German wine region of Franken.

This bottle shape has two different theories on to why it is used. One is derived from that of field bottles which were manufactured with a flattened shape for practical purposes, for example to keep the bottle from rolling away on uneven ground.  The other explanation of why the bottles are shaped the way they are is that the term actually means “ram’s scrotum”, which is supposed to be of similar shape as the bottle. In the dark ages, once the scrotum was dried out, it was used as a liquid carrying vessel. If you ask me, my reason for the shape is the second account, it is just a better story to tell.

Silvaner is a white grape and is grown mostly in Germany and central Europe.  In the best sites of Franken, where the Hans Wirsching winery is located, they are capable of producing full-bodied, firm wines with great natural acidity, delicious minerality and pleasing flavors.

The Hans Wirsching winery ranks among the best known and largest privately held wine estates in all of Franken. Now in its 14th generation, the Wirsching family has been making wine since the 1630's. Dry Silvaner is one of the Wirsching family's specialty. The original winery of their estate is located in the village of Iphofen, region of Franken, Germany. There, the family carefully cultivates the vines, harvest the perfect, fully ripened grapes and then lovingly guide the wine to emerge as distinctively unique wine that will enrich your life.
