October Wine Club wines from South Africa
10/07/2020
The wines this month are from Rooiberg Winery. The story of Rooiberg Winery – situated in the renowned Robertson Wine Valley – is that of a group of pioneering wine farms alongside three rivers surrounding the Rooiberg Mountain, which overlooks the cellar and its source vineyards. These are the Vink, Noree and Breede Rivers – geological features which give rise to extraordinary terroir and originally led to the establishment of these farms at a dependable source of water.

This month we are highlighting a Pinotage, Cabernet and the Chenin Blanc. I paired the Pinotage with Chicken Thighs cooked in an "African Sauce". This recipe is one that I use quite frequently, it is also fantastic over pork chops. Serve the chicken over rice, it is a great fall dish and it paired really well with the Pinotage.

I put together an original recipe this month for the Cabernet. Fall brings different types of squashes to the market. I made a butternut squash sauce to substitute for a traditional red sauce, used mushrooms as the main veggie, which gave the pizza a meaty taste and added yellow and zucchini squash to the the topping. This pizza was awesome, it is Vegetarian and super healthy. To make it Vegan, use vegan cheese or omit the cheese all together.

The white this month, a Chenin Blanc was paired with a Corn Grit and Shrimp dish. This twist on the traditional shrimp and grits was so tasty. This will be come a staple of mine for dinner parties. Although the recipe called for ears of corn that you were supposed to grate, the frozen sweet corn that I had in my freezer worked wonderfully. The "grits" were so good, fresh tasting, and with the shrimp saute and the Chenin Blanc to pair with it, it was Amazing!
