April wine club: Wines from Spain
03/23/2024
It is based in Campanas, in the north of the appellation, just on the road to Santiago. The winery used to be a pilgrim hostel. Bodegas Manzanos Campanas was one of the founders of appellation Navarra. If there was a sign of identity that characterizes this winery it would be fruitiness and freshness of its wines.

We are highlighting the Syrah, Chardonnay and Garnacha this month.  I paired the Syrah with a Mexican Pizza, this is a pizza that is super easy to make and pairs well with red wine.  The Charonnday I paired with a classic Gambas al Ajillo or in English: Spanish Garlic Shrimp recipe.  AJ took on the Garnacha this month and she paired it with Spanish Pork Chops.

The 1864 Castillo De Olite Syrah has dark fruit notes with some spice.  The Mexican pizza was perfect with the wine.  The inspiration behind this fun pizza is deconstructed Nachos and can be made as spicy as you want, depending on how much chili powder you use.  It has traditional nacho ingredients, minus the chips, of black beans, tomatoes, olives, shredded lettuce, cheese and sour cream. Fun, delicious and easy to make!

AJ tackled the Garnacha, here are her notes:  "I paired the Seniorio de Irati Garnacha with a Spanish style pork chop. This Garnacha is a lovely, medium bodied wine, I put a little chill on it and paired so well with this dish. The saltiness of the prosciutto along with the nuttiness of the Manchego cheese really brought out the dark fruit notes. Think of this as a Spanish version of Chicken Cordon Bleu, it was really easy to prep (25 minutes!) and could be a fancy weeknight meal. I quartered and roasted a red, yellow and orange pepper along with an onion for about 45 minutes to serve as a side dish, they really added the pop and brightness to the dish that I was looking for."

I paired the Chardonnay with the Garlic Shrimp and served it with lemon and asparagus rice and slices of crusty garlic bread.  The Chardonnay comes across very balanced and it paired nicely with the the sweet and spicy flavors and firm texture of shrimp.  The dish can be made as spicy as you want, but note that the spicier you go with the shrimp, the less it will complement the wine.

Senorio De Irati Garnacha
NOTES:  Spicy berry aromas come with welcome side notes of spice. Spiced black cherry aromas are pure and fruity, with a bold and tasty finish providing back up. This wine is juicy and bright throughout.

 1864 Castillo De Olite Chardonnay
NOTES:  Pale lemon yellow color, bracing aromas of peach, syrup, white fruits and pastry. The palate shows flavors of granny smith apple, green pear and brioche that conclude in a fruit-filled finish. Silky and round. A well balanced wine.
